DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://stable.researchseminars.org/talk/Heilb
ronnVVP/1/">Approximate groups</a>\nby Emmanuel Breuillard (University of
Cambridge) as part of Heilbronn Virtual Visiting Professors 2021\n\n\nAbst
ract\nSymmetry is one of the most fundamental concepts of science and math
ematics. Group theory is the field of mathematics devoted to its study. In
this lecture we will discuss various situations where symmetry is present
only partially and where a notion approximate symmetry arises naturally.
In group theory this leads to the notion of approximate group\, which has
been much studied in the last twenty years in connection with various fiel
ds including additive combinatorics\, harmonic and fractal analysis\, asym
ptotic finite group theory\, geometric group theory\, ergodic theory and e
ven logic and model theory. The lecture will introduce this concept and pr
 esent some recent developments.\n
