DESCRIPTION:Title: <a href="https://stable.researchseminars.org/talk/Pomon

nby Eugenia Cheng (School of the Art Institute of Chicago) as part of 47 L
ecture\n\nLecture held in Room 1051 in Estella Labs at Pomona College.\n\n
Abstract\nThe Department of Mathematics and Statistics is pleased to annou
nce the inaugural 47 Lecture. Eugenia Cheng\, Scientist in Residence at th
e School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, will give a talk titled "X+Y: A
Mathematician's Manifesto for Rethinking Gender." \n\nABSTRACT:\n\nThe qu
estion of why women and minorities are under-represented in mathematics is
complex and there are no simple answers\, only many contributing factors.
I will draw on a combination of precise mathematical reasoning\, techniqu
es of abstract mathematical thinking\, and my experiences as a woman in th
e male-dominated field of mathematics.I will argue that if we focus charac
ter traits rather than gender we can have a more productive and less divis
ive conversation\, about math and beyond. \nI will present a new theory fo
r doing so\, showing that we can use abstract mathematical thinking to wor
k towards a more inclusive society in this politically divisive era. \n\n
I will present the abstract field of Category Theory as a particularly inc
lusive subject area according to the dimensions of my new theory\, and dem
onstrate its scope for deepening the curiosity and social awareness of hig
h school students\, rather than just pushing and evaluating them. This goe
s against the assumption that abstract mathematics can only be taught to h
igh level undergraduates and graduate students\, and the accusation that a
bstract mathematics is removed from real life. No prior knowledge will be
needed.\n\nSPEAKER BIO:\n\nProfessor Cheng earned her doctorate in pure ma
th from Cambridge and won tenure at the University of Sheffield\, UK. She
is a Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago
and is an early pioneer of maths on YouTube\, with videos that have over 2
0 million views. Her popular math book How to Bake Pi was featured on the
Late Show with Stephen Colbert.\n\nBeyond Infinity was shortlisted for the
Royal Society Science Book Prize 2017. Professor Cheng writes the Everyda
y Math column for Wall Street Journal and is a commissioned composer for G
RAMMY-nominated soprano Laura Strickling. She also wrote "The Art of Logic
 \, X + Y: A Mathematician's Manifesto for Re-thinking Gender"\, and two ch
ildren's books. Her next book\, "The Joy of Abstraction"\, is out in Octob
er 2022 and Is Math Real? in 2023.\n
