nAbstract\nFriction is a ubiquitous phenomenon that hinders the performanc
e of thermal machines across all length and energy scales. Here\, we explo
re this effect from the perspective of thermodynamic geometry. We develop
a general framework that uses the concept of thermodynamic length to quant
ify friction-like energy losses in microscopic heat engines driven by slow
periodic temperature variations and external control fields. Covering bot
h the classical and the quantum regime\, this approach leads to a universa
l optimization principle and a new trade-off relation between power and ef
ficiency. These results follow solely from geometric arguments and hold fo
r any thermodynamically consistent microdynamics. Focusing on Lindblad dyn
amics\, we derive a second bound showing that coherence as a genuine quant
um effect inevitably reduces the performance of slow engine cycles regardl
ess of the driving amplitudes. We demonstrate the practical applicability
of our theory by using it to optimize the performance of a single-qubit he
at engine\, which lies within the range of current solid-state technologie

using quantum imaginary time evolution</a>\nby Mario Motta (IBM Research
 – Almaden\, 650 Harry Road\, San Jose\, California 95120-6099) as part o
f Quarantine Thermo\n\n\nAbstract\nThe accurate computation of Hamiltonian
ground and excited states on quantum computers stands to impact many prob
lems in the physical and computer sciences\, from quantum simulation to ma
chine learning. Given the challenges posed in constructing large-scale qua
ntum computers\, these tasks should be carried out in a resource-efficient
way. We recently introduced [1] the quantum imaginary time evolution and
quantum Lanczos algorithms\, which are analogues of classical algorithms f
or finding ground and excited states. Compared with their classical counte
rparts\, they require exponentially less space and time per iteration\, an
d can be implemented without deep circuits and ancillae\, or high-dimensio
nal optimizations. We discuss applications to spins and fermions.\n\n[1] M
