 y"\n\n\nAbstract\nThis talk will explain a construction due to the speaker
  (the bracket polynomial) that is a state summation model for the Jones po
 lynomial. This state summation is part of a larger structure that includes
  the Potts model in statistical mechanics and it has a quantum field theor
 etic interpretation via the functional integral approach of Edward Witten.
  We will explain the basics of these relationships without any prior knowl
 edge required of these areas of mathematics and physics.\n

 work with Gabriel Rivière. On a surface with negative curvature\, we show
  that Poincaré series counting geodesic arcs orthogonal to certain curves
  have meromorphic continuation to the complex plane. When these curves are
  homologically trivial geodesics\, we show there are no poles at 0 and rat
 ionality of the value at 0 by interpreting this value as a linking number 
 for Legendrian knots.\n
