 need to be defined by analytically continuing the external momenta. This p
 rocedure breaks down for amplitudes in the presence of D-instantons since 
 open strings on the D-instanton do not carry any continuous momenta and th
 erefore the divergences cannot be avoided by deforming the external moment
 a. In these lectures we shall show how string field theory leads to an una
 mbiguous procedure for evaluating these amplitudes. We shall not assume an
 y prior knowledge of string field theory\, but will assume knowledge of wo
 rld-sheet formulation of string theory\, including the b\,c ghost system.\
